Northreach Baptist Church traces its history back to 1888 when the first Baptist congregation was established in Townsville, making it one of the oldest churches in the city. What began as a small gathering of faithful believers grew through the dedication of pastors, leaders, missionaries, volunteers, and church members who faithfully proclaimed the Gospel across generations. Over the years, the church weathered challenges, expanded its ministry, and played a significant role in planting and supporting Baptist churches throughout Townsville and North Queensland. A major milestone came when Townsville Baptist Church and Currajong Baptist Church merged, creating a stronger foundation for future ministry and leading to the development of the current Kirwan campus. In time, the church became known as Northreach Baptist Church, reflecting its vision to reach people across North Queensland with the hope of Jesus Christ. Today, Northreach continues this legacy as a growing, multigenerational, and multicultural church committed to Following Jesus and Reaching People.

The Story of Northreach Baptist Church - It's A Big Story

Northreach Baptist Church has a rich and remarkable history that spans more than 138 years. Beginning as the first Baptist church established in Townsville, Northreach stands today as one of the oldest Christian congregations in our city. 

The Early Years: A Baptist Witness Begins

The Baptist story in Townsville began in January 1888. Following a decision of the Queensland Baptist Association to establish Baptist churches across regional Queensland, a foundation meeting was held on 27 January 1888. Two days later, on Sunday 29 January, Rev. T. Vigis conducted the first Baptist services ever held in Townsville. These gatherings marked the birth of what would become Townsville Baptist Church.

The early years were challenging. Ministers were scarce, facilities were limited, and Baptists were few in number. Yet faithful believers persevered. Worship services were held in rented halls and temporary locations while the young congregation established itself in the growing city. By 1891, land had been purchased in Sturt Street, and in 1893 a former Congregational church building was relocated to the site, providing a permanent home for Baptist worship.

Building Through Adversity

Like much of North Queensland, the church faced its share of challenges. Cyclone Leonta severely damaged the church building in 1903. Yet the congregation demonstrated remarkable resilience, salvaging what they could and continuing their ministry. In 1922 a new church building was constructed through sacrificial giving and volunteer labour. Members dismantled and reused thousands of bricks from a former building, creating a lasting testimony to the determination and faith of the Baptist community.

A Church That Planted Churches

As Townsville grew, the Baptist vision extended beyond a single congregation. The church became a sending church, planting and supporting new Baptist works across the region.

Over the decades, Baptist ministries emerged in various parts of Townsville and surrounding districts, including congregations in Stuart, Currajong, Upper Ross, northern beaches, Magnetic Island and other gatherings throughout the city. Many pastors, lay leaders, and church members left the comfort of established ministries to pioneer new works and extend the reach of the Gospel.

This commitment to multiplication reflected the New Testament pattern of making disciples who make disciples and churches that plant churches.

A Significant Merger and New Beginning

By the late twentieth century, the Townsville Baptist Church in the city and the Currajong Baptist Church had both reached a point where greater effectiveness could be achieved together than separately. In a significant step of faith, the two congregations merged and purchased a new larger property in Kirwan. This move created a stronger and more strategic ministry base for the future growth of the church. The former Sturt Street property, which had served Baptists since 1893, was sold in 1981 as the united congregation established itself in Kirwan.

The relocation marked more than a change of address. It represented a renewed commitment to reach the growing suburbs of Townsville and continue the mission entrusted to previous generations.

Becoming Northreach

As the church entered the twenty-first century, a fresh vision emerged. The name "Northreach" was adopted to better reflect the church's mission and calling, not simply to serve one suburb or congregation, but to reach North Queensland with the hope of Jesus Christ.

Northreach continued to expand its ministries through worship, discipleship, youth and young adults, children's ministries, local outreach, global missions, chaplaincy partnerships, church planting support, and community care initiatives and a significant commitment to embrace and support International Mission.

The church has also developed significant community ministries including food relief, social housing, pastoral care, internships, and partnerships with mission organisations both locally and overseas.

A Multigenerational and Multicultural Church

One of the great blessings of Northreach today is the diversity of its congregation. Children, youth, young adults, families, seniors, and people from many cultural backgrounds worship together as one church family.

The formal welcoming of the Karen congregation into Northreach in 2026 stands as a significant milestone in the church's ongoing commitment to unity in the Gospel. It reflects the biblical vision that people from every tribe, language, and nation are gathered together through Jesus Christ.

Faithful Leadership Across Generations

Northreach stands on the shoulders of countless faithful servants. Pastors, elders, deacons, ministry leaders, missionaries, volunteers, and members have each played their part in advancing God's kingdom.

Some served publicly from platforms and leadership positions. Others served quietly in prayer meetings, classrooms, kitchens, visitation ministries, maintenance teams, and behind-the-scenes roles. Together they have demonstrated that the church is built not by a few individuals, but by the whole people of God serving faithfully generation after generation.

Their legacy is seen in lives transformed, families strengthened, churches planted, missionaries sent, and communities impacted by the Gospel.

Looking Forward

Today Northreach Baptist Church remains committed to the same mission that inspired those first Baptist pioneers in 1888.

As we look to the future, we do so with gratitude for those who have gone before us and confidence in the God who continues to call us and lead us. The story of Northreach is ultimately not the story of buildings, programs, or personalities. It is the story of God's faithfulness through generation after generation of disciples who have sought to honour Christ and make Him known.

The next chapter of this story is still being written, and by God's grace, we are privileged to be part of it.
